What the PAT involves.

1. Physical control

Push and pull a weighted sled through a triangle formation, once at the start of the test and once at the end. The minimum is 37 kg of force, which the CBSA sets as the force needed to bring a suspect off balance.

2. Ground defence

Lie on your back and move a 36 kg sandbag, about the weight of an adult torso, from one side of the mat to the other. Two sets at the start and two at the end.

3. Agility drill

A modified Illinois agility test: quick, controlled changes of direction.

Because the sled and ground defence come back at the end, the real challenge is doing them well when you're already tired.

How we train it.

  1. Know where you stand

Your 60 minute assessment tests strength, conditioning and movement, then we set a plan around your training start date.

  2. Push and pull

Pushing and pulling strength, built up toward the 37 kg standard.

  3. Get strong on the ground

Hip, core and upper body strength for controlling a heavy load while lying on your back, with good technique.

  4. Sharpen your agility

Change of direction drills that simulate the agility test, coached on our turf.

  5. Train for the second round

Conditioning so the sled and ground defence still go well at the end of the test, plus retests to track progress.
