What the PFA Field involves.

1. Foot pursuit

Run 500 metres as quickly and safely as you can. The course may be 50 metre laps, a 250 metre out and back, or a loop. Standard: 2 minutes and 30 seconds or less.

2. Emergency assistance

  • Lift a 20.5 kg (45 lb) sandbag from the floor and tap it on a wall at 1 metre, moving side to side, 14 times. The 15th lift goes to 1.4 metres.
  • Then run 50 metres, pick up two 20.5 kg sandbags and carry them 50 metres. Do this three times.
  • Standard: the whole event in 3 minutes and 45 seconds or less.

3. Physical control

Sit with your back against a wall, legs apart, and throw a 4.5 kg (10 lb) medicine ball forward as far as you can. One practice throw, then three scored throws. Your longest counts. Standard: at least 2.6 metres.

You get at least 5 minutes of recovery between the three parts.

How we train it.

  1. Test all three parts

Your 60 minute assessment shows where you stand on running, lifting, carrying and upper body power, then we set a plan around your application timeline.

  2. Pace the 500 metres

Running work so you know the speed 2:30 asks for, and can hold it without fading on the last lap.

  3. Lift and carry under fatigue

Lifting technique for repeated sandbag lifts, then carries when your legs and grip are already tired. We simulate the event, not just the lifts.

  4. Build upper body power

Seated throwing power and the strength behind it, working toward 2.6 metres with a margin to spare.

  5. Retest, then look ahead to Depot

Progress checks against each standard, and training for what Depot adds if you move on: the fence, sled work, carries and stairs in kit.

What is on the RCMP PFA Field test?

Three parts, each pass or fail: a 500 metre foot pursuit run in 2 minutes and 30 seconds or less, an emergency assistance event (15 sandbag lifts with a 20.5 kg bag, then three 50 metre run and carry trips with two 20.5 kg bags) in 3 minutes and 45 seconds or less, and a seated 4.5 kg medicine ball toss of at least 2.6 metres. You get at least 5 minutes of recovery between parts.

How we train for it

When do RCMP applicants take the PFA?

Early in the application, after the online career presentation and entrance assessment. A recruiter contacts you to schedule it. The RCMP says applicants who apply on or after September 15, 2026 must pass it to move forward.

All law enforcement prep

Is the test at Depot different?

Yes. Cadets take a different version at the RCMP Academy, Depot. It adds a 1.4 metre chain link fence during the 500 metre run, a sled push and pull, a mannequin pull, loading objects into a truck, a carry replicating half a stretcher with an adult casualty, and a 90 second task in body armour with stairs. We train with that next step in mind.

How we train for it

Do you run the official PFA?

No. The RCMP runs the official test with trained evaluators, and it also lists PFA workshops on its recruiting events page. We prepare you for it.
