CBSA fitness preparation: PAT, PARE and the current guidance

If you have searched for CBSA fitness preparation, you may have found advice about PARE. Before using that advice to plan your training, check the current Canada Border Services Agency guidance. Its fitness pages now describe the Physical Abilities Test, or PAT.

Does CBSA still require PARE?

The CBSA testing overview says PARE is not required for the current officer trainee selection process identified as 2024-EA-OIM-FB-02-009.

That only covers the process CBSA names. Other roles, employers and future hiring rounds can be different. Check your own application instructions, particularly if they appear to differ from a general web page.

What is the CBSA PAT?

The testing overview lists three components: physical control, ground defence and an agility drill. It describes a push-pull sled, sandbag movements and a modified Illinois agility test.

That tells you what the test looks like. It is not a plan to copy in a gym.

When does the assessment happen?

According to CBSA’s physical fitness guidance, PAT takes place during the in-residence Officer Induction Training Program. The agency describes it as an evaluation of fitness rather than a pass/fail exercise, while warning that falling below its minimum standards increases the risk of injury or failure in the program. It also provides a self-evaluation tool.

So preparation still matters. “Not pass/fail” is not a reason to show up unprepared.

What should you confirm before choosing coaching?

  • The selection process number on your application.
  • The most recent instructions you have received from CBSA.
  • Your current recruitment stage and any known training dates.
  • Your current exercise experience and access to equipment.
  • Which parts of your fitness you would like help developing.

Save the relevant instructions and share them when asking about coaching. This avoids building a plan around an outdated article, a friend’s earlier application or a different agency’s test.

Choose support around your circumstances

You may want regular in-person coaching, or you may need a plan you can follow where you live. Be clear about how much guidance you want and where you will train before choosing either.

A general workout plan and ongoing personalized coaching provide different levels of support. An online program labelled for law-enforcement preparation should not be assumed to match every role’s assessment. Ask how the option fits your goals and equipment. You can compare Forever Aesthetic’s online training options before making a decision.
